Bad weather over the weekend has caused problems in the Limassol and Paphos districts.

A rockslide police to close a section of the Paphos-Limassol highway and a number of power cuts occurred in the Paphos district.

Late on Friday, following the rockslide, a section of the highway from Paphos to Limassol was closed, and remained closed on Monday, while crews attempted to clear it up.

“We would like to inform the public that the two northern lanes of the highway between Aphrodite’s Rock and Pissouri will remain closed,” a police statement said.

Traffic will flow on the Limassol to Paphos side of the highway with one lane used in each direction for around 1,600 metres. The temporary closure will remain until the road is cleared, police said.

Police recommend that the public use the old Paphos to Limassol road from the Ha Potami exit.

Drivers are asked to be especially careful and to conform to police and traffic signals.

The Electricity Authority (EAC) announced on Monday that it had restored power to homes in a number of communities in the Paphos district at around 1am following the bad weather over the weekend.

At around 6pm on Sunday the communities of Polemi, Ayios Demetrianos, Yiolou, Simou, Drymou, Kanaviou, Kritou Marottou, Anaviou kai Asproyia had their power cut. In its statement the EAC said that power was restored to all nine communities at 12.50am on Monday.

Head of Paphos’ communities union Michalis Efthymiou complained that electricity is cut at the first sign of rain and that between the communities of Tsada and Koilis, power cuts are a common phenomenon.

He called on the EAC to solve the problem and that amongst the problems caused are damage to electronic devices, like computers.

Efthymiou said that managing to get in touch with the EAC faults department has proven difficult.
